Tips on Finishing your Basement and Decorating Your Basement
Mon, 8th February 2010

You might be at that point in your life in which you are seeking to finish that basement of yours. Some of the basic information that we will be giving you on finishing your business are just tips; you might have to seek out professional help when it comes to certain things, but we will give you the basics on what needs to be finished.

The first thing you will have to do is clear out the basement. Move all the storage bins that you might have. It has to be cleared out so that you can work on the basement fully without having to move things here and there. One of the first things you will have to do to your basement is to make the walls, and the floors water proof. You do not want to have your basement flooding on those rainy days and ruining things in your basement.

You can install a sub floor if your basement floor is too cold for you , or you can just paint it or even put carpet over it. It still might be too cold if you do the previous two options. To put down a sub floor you need to lay down an inch or an inch and a half of polystyrene sheets directly on the whole basement floor to cover it. Then after that you will want to install half an inch of plywood to cover them up. After you install the plywood you can do anything with your basement floors. The most common thing to do after putting down the ply wood would be to place carpet over it.

If your basement is already insulated them you do not need to worry about getting a professional to help you with putting in insulation. To make your basement look better you might want to frame the ceiling and floor in some way that would go with your basements design.

If you need to run new electrical or plumbing work through the basement you will most likely need to have a professional electrician do that. Especially if the city you are living in requires it. The next thing you would have to do to finish your basement is to install drywall. You will then have to sand it down, tape it, and then paint it.

You can now paint your walls. But keep in mind the basic design that you want for your basement. Whether you are using it for an office, a game or entertainment room, an exercising room, or just as an extra room, you need to keep the wall colors to match whatever you are using the basement for. For an office or exercising room you might want to keep the wall colors a lighter shade. For an entertainment room you can choose the colors that would go correctly with the rooms furniture, and any other accessories you were to add to you basement. If it is for a bedroom or an extra room then the color will depend on the person who will be staying down there.

Now designing your basement shouldn’t be any different then designing the other rooms in your house. Keep to the same color scheme as the rest of your house. Try not to go so bright, because that might be considered appalling to anyone who might go down to the basement. You do not want to have too many different designs going on either. That is never pleasing to the human eye. Remember, designing your basement is just like designing any other room you were to have!

Beds

When it comes to maximizing your living area while being able to have great accommodations, one of the best investments is into a type of multifunctional bed such as a storage, sofa or bunk bed. These specific styles of beds allow you to not only have a comfortable bed, but give you additional space for storage or an additional bed.

With storage beds, you can get a really nice bed that also doubles as a storage unit underneath the mattress. This come in really handy in the case of a spare bedroom if you wanted to store additional linens, pillows and blankets or whatever else you needed.

Sofa beds, also known as pull out beds, are basically a sofa that has a bed underneath the cushions that extends outwards once you remove the sofa cushions. Sofa beds are usually best used in an open living room, in case extra company stays for the night or the weekend. It’s a really convenient and easy way to have another bed while still having a normal living room with sofas and other living room furniture.

Bunk beds are really neat for kids and young brothers and sisters who can share the same room. By stacking two single beds on top of each other, you literally get double the beds for the same amount of space, a perfect solution in many cases where the family is trying to save some room with the kids bedrooms.

When it comes to choosing a bed for more sleep room, it all depends on your needs and what goals you are trying to satisfy. Either way at the end of the day these three different types of beds provide strong beds with additional features whether it be more storage, a sofa to sit on, or two beds instead of one.

Beds

After all that time renovating and improving your home, it’s essential that your master bedroom not be neglected in terms of having the right mattress and bedding essentials. When it comes to getting into the right sleeping cycles, many people underestimate just how important this is to ensuring they have the right energy levels and are in a proper mental state. If you can’t sleep because you are tossing and turning all night, are worse yet are distracted by a partner who is tossing and turning all night, you should definitely look at investing into a memory foam mattress.

Memory foam mattresses have risen steadily in popularity since the early 1990’s after the material was first created by NASA back in 1966 to be used originally to improve aircraft cushioning and safety. It was then used in other commercial products including x ray tables and football helmet lining. As the material continued to decrease in cost and improve in terms of functionality and capabilities, it was perfect for the mattress industry and since the first models in 1991, have taken a good share of the mattress market away from traditional spring coil systems.

Memory foam mattresses can help improve your sleep cycle because their main benefit is to reduce the inconsistencies that you get with traditional spring coil systems, which can start to dip or become more soft in areas where you spend a lot of time in certain sleeping positions. With memory foam mattresses the material always contours to your body and then goes back to it’s original shape, so the “dipping” issue will never arise. Plus, since it’s not all one attached system you get less movement from one side of the bed to another compared to traditional beds, so even if your partner is tossing and turning it won’t affect your side of the mattress. At the end of the day it’s always shocking how families can spend thousands and thousands of dollars on home renovation projects on areas of the home where they spend very few time before deciding (wisely) to invest into a proper mattress such as a high end memory foam mattress.

Energy Saving Tips, Home Improvement Ideas

Wrong insulation is the main reason of the loss of energy. About fifty percent of energy is wasted due to cooling or heating a space using wrong insulation. To maintain your home or office temperate all through the season of winter, endow your windows and walls with the appropriate insulating equipment. Open all long curtains and Venetian blind on windows facing the direction south throughout winters sunshine hours, but shut them at nighttime to maintain the warmth in.

Just spinning your thermostat downward by 1C may possibly scratch your electricity bills by up to 10%. Heating water for washing and bathing is another spot you can hoard currency by adjusting the cylinder thermostat at 60C/140F.

Energy saving bulbs that are more competent have been obtainable for many years. Such bulbs have been conventionally compressed fluorescents, and still are the most widespread type of energy saving bulb. Earlier these bulbs come in a different type and those were not so popular, for the reason that they were large, took a substantial time to attain full intensity, and were pricey.

These energy saving light bulbs are more efficient than the standard bulbs. A conventional bulb squanders energy by fabricating heat in addition to the light. An energy saving bulb conversely works further like an incandescent tube. The electric current surpass all the way through the gas in the tube, illuminating it up without generating surplus heat.

Such bulbs also maintain the atmosphere free of dirt and air borne contaminants. Additionally, they are planned to trim down noise, generating calm surroundings. They are priced efficvetly and are easy to replace and offer outstanding visibility.

Computer monitors are responsible for more than one third of your computer’s energy utilization. If you are not utilizing the monitor, put it to snooze. Furthermore, turn off your computer before you go away every day. It may take a few minutes each day, but it will save you big time at the end of the month.

Energy saving bulbs also have the benefit of plummeting waste because of their longer lifetime, as it is predictable that 80 million conventional fluorescent tubes only are sent to landfill every year.

Evaluating the common lamps — the fluorescent bulbs have 10 times extra life. However, the price is higher than that of the common lamps. If you will utilize the energy saving lamps you will notice your savings in your next electrical energy bill. This is the reason that most people now prefer the use of such energy saving bulbs and fluorescent lamps.

An unbelievable energy cutback device, energy saving light bulbs are now more affordable than ever. In almost all homes, illumination is responsible for around ten to fifteen per cent of an electricity charge bill. Conventional light bulbs squander a lot of their power by turning their energy into heat. On an average, the energy saving bulb can save you $15 a year on the BARE minimum. Their life is also on an average, up to twelve times longer than common light bulbs.

By following the above tips and guidelines you will notice an immense change in your electricity bills. We all have to save energy — after all it is not only the matter of us, it is the matter of our earth and future generations to come.

Floors, Home Improvement Projects, Home Renovation Projects

Wood floors give a distinct look to the house and set the stage for everything else around it. It looks more beautiful and makes the entire house more attractivel, and hence represents a better investment. Wood floors are more durable and easy to clean, plus they come in different colors and the planks come in different sizes.

You can even get custom made planks too or you can cut them to the length you may want. Every time you polish the floor it looks spanking new! The one disadvantage of wood is that you cannot leave wood for a long period of time in contact with water as it expands and contracts when it comes in touch with moisture. It might rot and is not reversible.

When buying the flooring, buy a pre-finished type so it is easy — it comes sanded and finished, alternatively you can buy laminated floorings, they are also easy to install and can be done without a contractor. Laminated floorings are less expensive so they can be renovated every few years if needed then Pre-finished floorings and easy to maintain.

Here is the procedure to install hardwood floors if you do not want professional help:-

Clean the flooring base, make it smooth and sound before you start laying the flooring. It might sound strange but buy the flooring and let them cure in your house, so they get used to the humidity levels in the house. Make all markings on the wall for reference. Cover the floor with 15-pound asphalt felt to provide moisture protection with a staple gun.

With a chalk highlight the first row of flooring. Leave around ½ inch gap between the floor and the wall. The baseboard or base shoe molding will cover it towards the end.
Start with the widest plank for the first row from one side of the room. Drill holes for 1 ½ inch nails towards the base shoe/ baseboard. Put the face- nail through the plywood in the first row. Use the nail set to recess the nail below.

Nail the first row with the next two rows by hand. Drill more holes at 45 degree angle, centered on each joist towards the ends and every 10″ towards the length. Clip with 1/12 inch nails with a nail set. Be careful because many a times you might scratch the wood while nailing.

Start installing the rows one after the other; tighten the new row with the previous row before nailing them together. Leave at least 6 inches between the two adjacent end joints.

Always leave some crack between the planks for expansion so the wood can breathe.
If you are covering a large are of the floor use a floor nailer after you have installed the first three rows. Staple each joist into the subfloor but be careful not to scratch or damage the floor.

Use a block and a bar to wedge the last board in its position. Again drill holes and face the nails where the base shoe/ baseboard is and make references on the wall set the nail heads below with a hammer and nail set. And at the end re-install the baseboard molding so one cannot see the nails and it looks clean and beautiful. Clean swipe the floor then you can see if any nail is hanging out or any row is not done right. The wood floor is as strong as any other floor but can also crack and damage. Proper care has to be taken as the wood is expensive, make sure that the proper cleaning material is always used. I prefer using laminated floor to the pre-finished floor as it is cheap and easy to maintain, and remember to always consider the costs (and time!) of doing it yourself versus hiring a professional contractor.

Home Improvement Projects, Roofs

Making sure your roof is in good condition is an essential part of home maintenance.  Leaks, damaged shingles, and moisture build-up, can cause serious problems for a home owner. As well, the sun’s ultra violet rays deteriorate the shingles by breaking down their structural elements, causing the shingles to degrade and lose their defensive particles. Depending on the extent of the damage, one may have to do minor repairs or replace the roof.

The shingles are the most important part of the roof that needs to be kept in good condition. The durability and quality of the asphalt based shingles and the reinforcing mat are both essential to ensuring that the roof is protected. Asphalt shingles can have a number of different mats such as a paper mat or fiberglass based mat. One of the best and strongest mats is the fiberglass matted asphalt. They do not tear or wear down very easily.

Shingles can also vary according to such matting differences as the number of laminated layers, the weight per square, wind warranty, and the length of the warranty.  Metal roofing is growing in popularity because of the strength, durability, and they last a long time. There are lesser used shingles such as clay, wood, and natural slate.

To choose the best shingle for a roof repair or replacement, one must consider the proper installation of the leak barrier, including around the chimneys and roof peaks, the underlay (matting), the starter strips for installing around edges, and the quality of the shingles. There are shingle caps which cover the peak of the roof. They are made of stronger material.

For any roofing repair or replacement, make sure you have a manufacturer’s warranty. If you hire a professional contractor/roofer, make sure that they are certified to work on roofs. You must receive a signed contract from the contractor that outlines the terms and conditions as well as a description of work they will do, including a list of the materials.

Not every roof needs to be replaced. Generally, if an asphalt roof is more than 20 years old, or a metal roof is more than 50 years old, one should consider a roof replacement. It is important to have your roof inspected by a professional and reputable contractor to make sure that you do not replace a roof that requires only minor repair.

Gardens, Home Improvement Ideas, Home Improvement Projects

Conventionally most people do not start planting and landscaping during the fall, and put new gardening efforts on hold till spring. However, fall has its own niche in gardening. The right fall gardening can be exiting if done with the right background knowledge and goals.

First of all, fall is a period when you would want to clean up your garden and start forming an aesthetic landscape. Clear up the leaves and make the grass the right size. If you already have a colorful garden then decorate the garden to look exactly the way you want that goes the best with the colors. Autumn is the color season, so make the best of enjoyable landscapes using the colors. Pay special attention if you have roses - without the extra care they stand a chance of dying during the winter.

In addition, fall is the best time to prepare planting for spring. If you want some plants to bloom in the spring, what can be a better time to plant them than now, in the fall? And make sure that you prepare the soil properly so that the plants grow well and healthy. Remember, the soil temperature is still high enough and would favor a good growth of the roots of new plants. This will not be the case as winter settles in and the soil temperature goes down. Plants grown indoors during winters and transplanted outside on advent of spring can never match the ones planted in the autumn.

What is the right time to start planting the fall plants? Anywhere between five to seven weeks before the frost starts in your area is the best time for fall planting. You need to provide sufficient time to the roots to grow deep enough before the winter bites.

The best choice of plants to grow during this period depends on your exact location, climate zone, the space available and your choices of vegetables, fruits and flowers. You may plant crops with affinity to heat such as tomatoes and sweet potatoes if you are in a zone where frost hits relatively later. You may decide to replace some of your summer perennials with plants that bloom in the autumn such as Marigold and Ornamental Cabbage. Or you may decide to grow spring-flowering bulbs.

As long as you select the vegetables, crops, flowers and fruits to your heart’s choice and balance your plans between today - the fall autumn - and tomorrow - the spring season - gardening and landscaping during autumn can be an enjoyable experience that would enchant you and beautify your garden today and tomorrow.

Saunas

The conventional belief among many of us is that a sauna is a great luxury item that one uses only if they feel like having a session of luxury. However, this belief does not reflect the reality. In reality, with the right kind of sauna, one can enjoy a number of health benefits as well. And it is the set of health benefits that makes having a sauna at home a truly interesting proposition.

Before going further, one must understand that the saunas you find today are of two types. One is the traditional sauna that runs on steam. This is the kind of sauna that would give you a long-term comfort at the expense of a short-term one. You feel hot and sticky during your sweat session. At the end of your sauna session, once you come out and have your shower - and then you feel much better and much more relaxed. There are two major disadvantages with the steam sauna. One is that you must bear the heat during your sauna session to reap the benefits later. The other one is that such a sauna being fixed, you can only hope to do it in a fixed location. If you want one for your home, you need to physically build a separate room for it and that may be highly impractical.

The other option is an infrared sauna. Infrared saunas use the infrared rays to make you sweat without creating heat. In fact, the infrared rays are a form of invisible light with high wavelength and low frequency, and these rays are capable of penetrating inside your skin to the exact desired depth. The most popular form of infrared sauna is a far infrared sauna. Far infrared saunas are portable. Having a portable sauna at home is easy since you don’t need to build a separate room for it. Such saunas come in different sizes, including smaller 1-person and 2-person sets and larger sets.

The health benefits that an infrared sauna creates are many. Some are:

Skin improvement: Since the infrared rays penetrate deep into the skin and perform a deep cleansing, the quality of the skin improves significantly. It not only enhances the glow, but ensures longer life and better quality of your skin cells.

Detoxification: This is arguably the biggest health benefit that an infrared sauna provides. The toxic substances inside our muscles and below our skin are released by the infrared rays. The removal of toxins provides an immediate relief to our physical machinery and the body metabolism shows significant improvements.

Blood supply improvement: The toxins being removed and metabolism having improved, the blood supply is markedly improved and the body feels the positive impact of this. Your overall potential span of life increases.

Joint pain removal: The infrared rays provide different joints such as the knee joint of your body with a much-desired relief. The joint pain recedes and in many cases completely vanishes.

As you see, an infrared sauna is not merely an item for showing off riches. The therapeutic benefits are immense and that is the main motivator of owning your own far infrared sauna.

Trying to find space in your home for all of your loose and large items can be a difficult task. One useful way of storing items is to install a metal garage. A metal garage is an effective way to store items without having to worry about water and temperature damage to the stored items. If you are interested in building a garage yourself, it can be easy when you use ready-made prefab metal garage that is supplied in a kit.

The prefab metal garage is designed for the do-it-yourselfer. It is easy to put together and there is no shortage of appropriate tools. They are available in a broad range of types that includes different styles and sizes.  It is much cheaper than hiring a professional to build a metal garage from the ground up.

Each metal garage is shipped with an easy-to-follow and step-by-step building manual that provides a list of all of the components included such as standard sized size bolts for all connections. They also have polyethylene washers for sealing the bolt connections.

To give you an idea of what building a metal garage entails, the following are guidelines to building a garage:

1. Your pre-fabricated metal building kit should include the following items: build arches, raise arches, and endwall panels. These pieces will be pre-cut, pre-drilled with components such as weather strip and heavy-duty curved angles. You will have to acquire the appropriate tools from a hardware store.

2. A solid and long-lasting foundation is essential for installing a metal garage. You have to consider such factors as the location, conditions of the soil, and foundation material such as concrete cement. Install the flooring by pouring a floating concrete perimeter footing onto a level and secure site.

3. The arches are used for the sidewalls and the roof. It has to be water tight to avoid future leaks. Helpers can assist you with raising the arches. Secure the arches to the foundation. If is going to be a tall metal garage, you may have to construct a scaffold.

4. The endwall panels are pre-cut and numbered which makes them easy to install. They are designed for any type of door. End wall panels are the walls that fit on either end of the structure. They are designed to easily bolt onto the base connector and the end arch panel. Steel-framed openings are installed into the end walls for doors and windows.

We could all use extra storage space, especially for items that we only use occasionally such as sports equipment, camping gear, snow plows, gardening equipment…etc. If you build a garage that is also big enough serve as a workshop, you will be making an important addition to your home as it will increase the value of the property. Metal garage kits offer a number of reasonably priced and heavy-duty selections and installation choices such as the do-it-yourself kit which one can easily erect without expert help just by sticking to the easy to follow directions.

Windows

Vinyl has become a viable rival for traditional materials such as wood over the years. It has proven to be comparable to, if not more efficient in many cases, the use of windows and doors, and offers design flexibility, minimal maintenance, and efficiency in energy and cost savings.

The word “window” takes it’s origin from the Norse word “vindauga” which loosely translates to “eye for the wind”. The window was meant to be both functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

After the end of World War II, there was a shortage of materials such as wood, aluminum and steel so the Germans, in their efforts to rebuild, began to use a vinyl framing, which was a new thermoplastic. By 1959, BF Goodrich Company, a vinyl resin manufacturer decided to try their hand at  vinyl window production, and offered sleek designs similar to that found  in wood or metal window frames. Americans found that these were much more readily acceptable designs, compared to that of the smaller and bulkier German designs.

Designs improved and popularity grew; sales of vinyl grew in the mid 1990’s for both new construction and remodeling by 125%. Most window manufacturers offer vinyl windows as an option along with their more traditional wooden and metal frames. Innovations in vinyl formulas have helped to improve flexibility in designs
.
With improvements having been made over the last few decades to the manufacturing process of vinyl windows, maintenance is practically non-existent and non-essential. If the product requires a bit of cleaning, common household cleaners will make short work of the task, leaving the window as good as new. The average life span of a vinyl window varies depending on the use of the item, but on average warranties are offered for 20 to 30 years. To ensure the quality of the window’s construction and performance, most vinyl windows produced today are certified by a third-party company and independent laboratory testing is performed in accordance with stringent industry standards.

Some of the newer innovations made to vinyl are the addition of sawdust and cellular foam. The wood mixed with the vinyl has made a new option of embossing the vinyl so that it looks like wood and can even be stained or painted like wood. The use of cellular foam has made huge differences in the shapes and appearances of the trims. These are great to use as they do not rot or decay at all. Vinyl windows and other products made by the same process are color fast because the color is not just on the surface but is extruded through the entire product. The product is not only rot and rust free, but is impervious to pests like ants and termites.  When made properly, the product also contains UV inhibitors to protect from sun damage and cracking or splitting.

Windows made of vinyl framing are suitable for most building needs but cannot be used in high rise buildings or in places where there are consistently high winds. Tests on the windows are conducted to determine the limits the vinyl windows can withstand safely. Over the years the cost of vinyl windows has become much more affordable due to the popularity and easy accessibility to the goods required to manufacture the vinyl or vinyl composites. As a result they have become a cost effective alternative to metal and wooden frames.

Steel Buildings

Outdoor steel buildings are a great choice when you want to protect items from outdoor elements such as fire, flood, rain, and snow. When planning to add a steel building, you have to consider what materials you will use. One important building material for a steel building is insulation. It will help reduce heating costs and prevent moisture build up. The key to ensuring proper climate control is to make sure that you properly install the insulation.

The following steps outline what is involved with properly installing insulation in a metal building:

1. The first thing to do is apply double-sided tape to the frame of the building. Make sure that you place the tape where the insulation will be secured.

2. Unroll a layer of the insulation and fit it over the frame.

3. Roll out the insulation over the frame. As you unroll, lay the insulation between the frame and the sheeting.

4. Metal buildings allow more heat to flow through than wood frame buildings. Using larger steel studs and joists will help add more insulation because the space between the steel bars tends to be wider. By using wider pieces of insulation, it will effectively block the flow of air

5. Apply the sheeting over the insulation. Insert metal strapping to hold everything in place on the walls. It is important to refer to the manufacturer’s manual for your specific insulation materials. If you need thicker layers of insulation to improve the warmth in the space, polyurethane foam can be used. It can be sprayed into the insulation space and then it expands to match the measurements. This allows the walls to be filled with polyurethane foam insulation without having to add thicker layers of insulation to the walls.

6. Check the insulation to make sure that some of it is hanging down.

7. Attach sheeting and tape up the seams. Place metal tape over the seams.

In cold climates, these steel framing pieces will act as a heat channel. Heat will be conducted right through the steel studs to the outside. Therefore, for metal frame walls, you will need to place the insulation sheet over the outside of the wall frame between the metal framing pieces and the outer siding. Taping all seams and taping the floor and ceiling will provide a good moisture barrier.

Don’t spoil your investment by permitting air and moisture to enter the building. When constructing a well-insulated building, you want to make sure that that the structure isn’t allowing unnecessary drafts inside the building. You can check for this problem when the frame work is complete and the paneling has been attached. You just have to feel for drafts. If you sense any air, you should fix the problem before adding anymore insulation. With a little thought and planning, installing insulation in a metal building to keep warm air in and cool air out can make all the difference in the building’s structural integrity.
