Ensure You’re Dressed Appropriately for the Job at Hand
Thu, 26th August 2010

Many home renovation professionals can attest to how critical it is to make sure you are properly equipped and protected by having the right workwear for the job at hand. For those that underestimate the importance of such workwear there can be potentially disastrous repercussions. Thousands of injuries occur on the worksite and around the home all the time, ranging from minor injuries like sprained ankles or minor abrasions or cuts on the hands all the way to broken feet, broken fingers, serious abrasions and even concussions.

That is why it’s essential to make sure you are properly equipped with all the necessary workwear, for each task or home renovation project this will differ but there is a lot of overlap. First off,  a good pair of workboots with steel toes is critical if you are doing any type of home renovation or improvements as sprained ankles or broken toes is probably the most common work related injury when it comes to home renovations and projects. By ensuring you have a good pair of workboots you can eliminate many potential injuries right away. Secondly a good pair of work gloves is critical too so you don’t end up having horrible blisters by the end of the day - which would then not allow you to work as comfortably (or even at all) to finish your other projects in the day/week. Plus you can avoid many small cuts and abrasions by wearing a pair of good work gloves.

Other workwear includes hardhats, work belts to hold all of your most important equipment as well as work trousers to protect your legs and feet once more. By equipping yourself with the right workwear for the job you can not only work faster but also smarter and safer so before starting that next home renovation project make sure you get equipped properly.

Lawn Scarifier – Your one step lawn maintenance system

When we think of building a family home, one of the first things that comes to the mind is a lush green lawn in front, and it is also one of the most frequent requests home owners make to their architects and general contractors. Creating a lawn at home might not be too difficult, but the problem is to maintain it.

We have so many different challenges in maintaining a lawn – the most common of them being weeds, thatch, and brown grass. It is a fact that a lawn looks great only when it is green. A brown lawn is detrimental to the look of the home. But in todays busy lives, how much time do we have to spend on maintaining a lawn – watering it, pruning it, and weeding out the unnecessary parts?

That is where a lawn scarifier comes in. Unlike other lawn equipment, this one does multiple things at one go – from raking to removing thatch to removing dead matter without harming the grass shoots. A basic version would allow us to manually run the scarifier over the lawn – just like we run a manual lawn mover. There are also electric versions which run on either power or batteries. For homes with large lawns, there are petrol based lawn scarifiers available, which eliminate the problem of snaking power cables across the lawn and porch.

Avid gardeners would know that a little thatch – of usually a centimeter or so – is good for the lawn. Good models of lawn scarifiers automatically leave a little thatch on the ground and then remove the rest of it. If needed, you can adjust the settings to remove that also, or to leave more.

A lawn scarifier is a must have for home owners who love their lawns. It is not expensive, and the tasks it takes care of are immense! Look up the various options available and choose the one which suits you the best.

Home Decor

The first thing we notice when we come to a person’s home is the door handle! Believe it or not, several ancient cultures had the trend of identifying a person’s social status by looking at the door and its handle!

Most of us just go in for simple handles that come along with doors. For those of us who use electronic gadgetry on our doors, there really is no choice when it comes to locking devices, but having a nice unique set of hand crafted door handles would make the home look much more welcome.

Some of the most interesting designs in door handles are themes from the medieval era. Crafted with the unique architecture of the period, they lend a unique persona to your door, and to your home. Suffolk door latches are among the most popular options available in the genre, and the best designs are crafted with a beeswax finish - rendering them smooth to the touch. Especially for homes with wooden doors, a Suffolk latch would lend immense attractiveness.

There are also several other accessories available from the medieval era - T hinges for instance. When we get a period door handle installed at home, we will also want the other accessories like hinges and locks to suit the style, and buying them as a set will save a significant amount of money. And a Suffolk latch and T hinge set is not just for the main door of the home. They can be installed on internal doors, garages, and on windows facing outside. All of us cannot live in medieval castles, but the homes we live in can be made to look a bit like them, and these accessories are among the easiest changes one can make.

The next time you are installing a new door or are changing the fittings on your existing one, consider hand crafted door handles - they’ll lend a unique look to your home.

Floors

Flooring accidents mainly slips and slides are more common nowadays with the introduction of laminate and wood flooring together with poor up-keeping. In most cases the results will amount to a light bruise which will disappear after a few days, however for the elderly and those with a walking disability the results might prove far more serious. To prevent flooring related accidents, follow up on our simple tips below.

Prevention - When choosing the right floor for your home or work place, ask yourself which material is the safest for your needs and the type of foot traffic the floor will cope with. While laminate, wood flooring and even carpets might look fantastic, other materials such as tile PVC flooring with anti-slip technology will prove extremely grippe making it a more sensible choice.

Be Prepared - In case you have recognized areas which have a high likelihood of becoming slippery such as the bathroom area, consider using anti slip add-ons such as self adhesive safety tapes and grippe mats to cover parts of the floor.

Cleanliness - A few types of floor coatings might be more receptive to becoming a slippery surface leading to unsafe environment, especially when poor maintenance is applied. In addition, use of low grade cleaning chemicals and those with oily residue properties might make the floor slippery. In many cases there’s really no need for cleaning chemicals, regular mopping with a damp mop will work for most floors, however if you do decide to use chemicals make sure that the right cleaning chemicals which are specifically made for your type of floor are used.

Hygienic safety - Although hygienic safety isn’t regarded as a flooring accident, the results from poor hygienic practices will have serious results. The key so prevent such concerns is to hoover or brush the floor on a daily basis and use fresh cleaning supplies.

Re-coating Advice - A few types of wooden flooring such as solid wood floors will allow you to re-coat the floor, thereby increasing its longevity. This process will also make the floor extra slippery for a while and should be done when no one is home.

Plumbing

If you are a homeowner, you probably regard your house as being the single largest and most important investment you’ll make in your life, not merely a place to live.  It is essential to protect this investment to ensure as large a return as possible.  But there is an issue.  More than an issue, but an enemy: water. Good plumbing and drains are essential in your home because water inside the house is a dangerous enemy that needs to be controlled.

Drains are an essential component of a good plumbing system. Scraps of food while doing dishes in the kitchen clog the sink; food must go down, and stay down.  Purchasing a garburator is an excellent way to add lasting value to your home for two reasons: it prevents drainage clogs and keeps bacteria and dirty food particles out of sight, leaving your kitchen free of germs when you’re preparing food (a good time to be germ-free).   The washroom poses potentially far more devastating problems: it’s not hard to imagine the disaster when a toilet begins to spew it contents!  With this in mind, it’s easy to understand the value of having reliable drainage in one’s home, and that’s why it’s an extremely valuable asset to be able to claim when estimating your house’s monetary value.

Chinese water torture is famous because it reveals the damage a single drop of water can do over a long span of time.  If leaky plumbing goes unnoticed for a few weeks, even days, it can do a surprising amount of damage to more areas than you may initially think.  Mere drops of water seeping out of pipes will gradually ruin paint, drywall, and will rot wooden beams and frames.  Disaster stories range from paintings receiving water damage, mold build-ups, to basement floods.  The essential thing is to fix it immediately because these problems get exponentially worse as time elapses.  Look up towards the ceiling in places where you know there are pipes and be actively on the lookout for leaks. All it takes is a glance every once in a while.

Sometimes water can infiltrate from outside the house.  One thing to do is make sure your eavestrough isn’t clogged by leaves.  You want the water to run off your roof and get as far away as possible as soon as possible.  You don’t need to actually climb on the roof to check this, just make sure the water emerges from the base of the eavestrough where it’s supposed to come out.  If it’s coming out in small drips during a hard rain it means it’s likely collecting on the roof, so be alert.  In any case, it takes a small amount of water can create massive headaches.  In all cases it’s cheaper to fix it upon initial sighting.

Plumbing is especially important to do well because pipes are frequently hidden behind walls. If there is a problem it usually won’t be detected for some time, and once it’s been discovered it’s frequently necessary to tear holes in the walls in order to access the plumbing so it can be repaired.  Sometimes, the process involves making several holes in the wall before the leak in the plumbing can be detected.

Suffice it to say, a good plumbing and drainage system is a terrific and necessary investment because it is a core part of the home that greatly increases its desirability and overall value.

Home Improvement Projects, Home Renovation Projects

One of the most satisfying projects one can undertake is interior design remodeling. We all like to be masters of our living space whether at home or at the office and designing your space is a great way to flex control and creativity. While designing may seem easy, the actual steps involved can be a little involved. It all boils down to planning.

While hiring a professional interior designers is a choice for many, there are many more who decide to take on the project themselves. While there are many benefits to a professional, those who choose to do it themselves swear that the flexibility and control over all aspects of the project more then makes up for the added work.

What many fail to realize is the amount of planning that actually goes into each design session. An accurate floor plan is the backbone to any interior designing project. You need to place all windows, doors, outlets and anything else that can either be in the way or that should not be blocked.

A tape measure is the best tool along with paper and, of course a pencil. You will want to jot down the proper location of electrical outlets, phone jacks, windows, doors, and what you want to use as walk ways. You might think that you know where these things are you will still do well to put it down on paper. This will limit the mistakes possible.

Of course, a professional will undertake the measurements on their own. While you may think that you will be able to remember certain measurements, take nothing by chance. You may even want someone to go behind you to double check the measurements you took. While you may think it will hurt your pride you will be grateful for that extra set of eyes if a mistake was actually made.

Once you have an accurate blue print of the floor space you may want to make copies. This will save time should you make any mistakes. Instead of drawing up another plan you can just grab another copy. Another helpful tip is to use movable furniture templates that you can easily move around in order to see all the possibilities available.

Now comes the fun part, the realization of your ideas. Brainstorming ideas, shopping for items, and recreating your living space into something new, unique, and fresh will surely make all that planning worth your while. Inspiration can come from the internet, design shows, and magazines, an abundant source for those not using professionals.

Bring your blueprint with you along with your tape measure as you shop. The blue print will keep your inspiration in perspective. So you might be tempted to go with that grand piano, you might not actually have room for it and you will be able to tell that by checking your blue print.

While redesigning your space is fun it does take a certain amount of planning. Short cuts can not be made when coming up with your blue print so take care and take time as you map it all out. Interior design remodeling is perfect for home owners and office workers just make sure to take the time, effort, and care to do it properly.

Energy Saving Tips

In this age of environmental protection and green living, many people find themselves faced with home renovation projects which can help reduce their environmental impact. These are excellent things to do and, apart from potential tax breaks now, can reward you over the years. Most people choose to renovate homes they have planned to stay in for many decades, since the costs will eventually pay for themselves. However, there are little things that even renters can do to help.

One common, though initially expensive, procedure is to install solar energy and thermal panels on your roof. These are costly to make and install, and therefore costly for the consumer. This is definitely something for a long-term abode because they will reduce your heating and electricity bills enough to pay for themselves over the years.

They take heat and energy from the sun and convert it into heat and energy for your house. It makes the consumer far less reliant on fuel and regular electricity. They require little-to-no maintenance and can barely be noticed on your roof. You can get huge tax credits for installing something so good for the environment.

One can also put in energy-efficient insulation. Most people put in fiberglass insulation which is both good and bad. It is good because it keeps a house very warm and therefore does not require as much energy or fuel to heat. The bad component is that fiberglass is not biodegradable. Many houses that have been demolished or repaired cause insulation to be thrown away. It has a very negative impact on the environment it ends up in.

A smarter option would be to research what other products are available in your area. Mineral wool, for example, is a natural product made of minerals that conducts heat extremely well. The downside is that it does not protect as well against fires. There are countless options you can use. Ask your contractor or do your own research to figure out what might work best for you.

Pellet stoves are great for green living. They use wood pellets instead of actual logs and can get just as much heat out of far less wood. This not only keeps more trees living, but it allows people to use less heat. This is another device which can get you a tax write-off. It is not wasteful, either. Modern pellet stoves come with sensors so they can automatically shut off or turn on when certain temperatures are reached. In this way, no heat is wasted.

Wind turbines are huge structures which harness the power of the wind, just as windmills did. Only wind turbines feed their power to homes and businesses. Keep an eye out for turbines in your area. They are still to large and costly to be logical options for each individual home, but scientists are working on making their benefits reach every person.

There are also small things you can do to conserve your own energy. Use energy efficient lighting. Make sure that all windows and doors are draught-proofed so you do not lose heat. Create a good recycling center in your home to make separation of recyclables easier. Have timers on your appliances so they can be sure to be turned off every morning, in the event that you forget when you are running late to work.

Solar Energy

With the diminishing natural resources and the vast amounts of green house gases being pumped into our atmosphere, many people are now looking for alternative energy sources to power their homes. Renewable energy solutions such as solar power have now become a popular alternative to traditional planet polluting resources. The energy that solar power generates is free and unlimited.

Below is a general guide on building your own solar panels:

1. Make sure your home receives an unobstructed view of the sun. The amount of sun the solar panel captures will depend on a clear path. Maximum sunlight will mean maximum electricity being generated.

2. Acquire the material that you will use to mount the solar panel. Although you could use OSB materials, plywood is much stronger and durable for bad weather conditions. You will also need a soldering gun, pair of gloves, and goggles, as you will have to attach solar cells together, if you are installing more than one solar panel.

3. Purchase a solar panel that is between 12 volts and 16 volts. The price for one solar panel is around $100.00. Then, purchase a rechargeable battery. A 12 volt lead or acid battery is recommended. A deep cell battery is the type you should acquire because it is long lasting.

4. You will now need a DC meter that is equivalent to the voltage of your battery. You will also need a DC input. These items convert the energy from the solar panel which then powers the home.

5. Now it is time to install the solar panel and devices. Use a drill to install the DC input and meter to the top part of the battery box. You will then connect the meter to the battery using insulated wire. Connect the first wire to the negative input first and then use the same method to attach the DC input and the solar panel to the battery.

6. Attach the solar panel onto the plywood and attach it to the home. Wait 8 – 12 hours, and then it is ready to start converting the sun’s energy to sustainable energy.

Solar panel kits are a very good choice for installing your own solar panels. These kits come with everything you need to build your solar panel and are easy to install. There are many companies that now sell these kits.  When you build your own solar panels, you are not only contributing to the planet, but you are also saving a lot of money on your power and heating bills.

Gardens

A trip to a garden centre to buy tools can be an overwhelming experience. The choice can seem bewildering and it can be tricky making the right selection. Thankfully most gardens can be looked after with a handful of utensils. Having the correct tools for maintaining your garden will make work easier, faster and produce a higher quality finish. Below is a compact guide featuring advice on how to choose and buy your tools.

When buying your garden tools it pays to be frugal and only purchase what you need. Have a walk around your garden and take not of the height and density of trees and plants. A vast green space with many trees would be suitable for a pair of long handled loppers. Not so if you had a small garden with no trees, for example.

The essential gardening tools which should cover you general maintenance tasks include;

• Spade
• Fork
• Secateurs
• Gardening knife
• Dutch or draw hoe
• Garden rake
• Wheelbarrow
• Watering Can

Be sure to test the tools in the garden centre for weight and length of handle to ensure it is a suitable to your build. Also make sure the tools are durable, functional and comfortable to use.

You can prolong the life of your tools by keeping them clean, sharp and in good repair. Keep a bucket of clean sand and machine oil in the garage to cure tools after each use. This is particularly helpful for rust-prone instruments such as garden forks and hoes. After use, rinse with water and dry the blades. Then insert them in the oil/sand mixture. The sand will scour off debris, and the oil will coat the metal, retarding dutst.

Collectables, Storage

When thinking about collectables in the home, it is all about one thing - personality!

As collectables are something that means alot to the individual they should reflect that interest. Collectables are usually something you would want to cherish forever and pass on to someone later in life, so consider this when starting a collection.

There are many aspects of collecting that we must consider, but first we must establish the difference between collections and collectables. There is a difference! Collections are often large numbers of one thing, for example different paintings by the same artist or playing cards from a certain era for example.

A collectable on the other hand is something that is to be cherished for a long time or holds some significant emotional value for the owner.

Where do I put collectables once I have bought them?

It is important to consider the safety and protection of your collectables as you will want to preserve their look and tidiness, but also value! Think how much your figurines or glassware could be worth in 20 years time if it is still in mint condition, without chips or dents.

Because of this is should always be worth getting a storage cabinet or stable glass cabinet to show of your collectables in the home. They should be your centrepiece, something that you and friends can enjoy when they visit.

To mix or match?

You should also consider whether or not you wish to stay exclusive to one type of prestige collectable or in fact you wish to branch out and create multiple niches in which to collect. Many collectors will just settle with one type of collectable, for example glass bowls or animal sculptures.

This is entirely up to the individual, but often mixing too many different types of collectables will look a little messy. If you choose to do this, ensure you arrange the items separately, so that they can all be appreciated properly.

The most important thing with collectable items is to cherish them and by looking after them, you will have them for years to come.
