Types of Freezers in the Market Today

October 11th, 2011

There are many people, who cannot differentiate between refrigerators and freezers. Though these two devices are very similar in terms of their application or use, they also have differences and hence the need to categorize each of them individually. Freezers, just like refrigerators are used to store foods. They ensure this by providing very cold temperatures that bacteria or other organisms that cause food spoilage cannot survive in. One of the most significant differences between the two is in the temperatures they provide. While refrigerators do not offer extremely cold conditions, freezers can go as low as -18° C. This means that they can store food for longer and ensure that it does not get spoiled.

So, what are the different types of freezers? Chest freezers are the most common type. They normally have a height that does not exceed the waist and are very efficient in terms of energy. In fact, they can keep the food cold for a very long period of time, even when there is no power. The dominant feature with such freezers is the hanging basket, where food is stored. Actually, these baskets are used instead of the normal shelves and drawers that are common in other types of freezers as well as refrigerators. Chest freezers make very economical utilization of space and are considerably affordable. However, retrieving food that is stored in the deep ends may be very cumbersome.

The second type is known as Upright freezers. Unlike Chest freezers, they are completely made with shelves, some of which are removable. They come as a single unit and may have one or two doors. This type is more suitable for a medium sized family that does not freeze huge quantities of food. The good thing with these freezers is that they have the manual defrost feature that ensures that the cabinets on the inside remain frost-free. They occupy comparatively small space and are therefore ideal to be kept in the kitchen. Their shelves and cabinets are perfectly arranged and thus, getting things in and out becomes very easy and fast.

There is a type of freezer, which is combined with the refrigerator to form one huge compartment. It is known as the Refrigerator-Freezer Combo. This is a very popular design among many homes as it helps in saving space. In such designs, each of the two compartments has separate thermostat that functions differently to achieve required results. However, most of these systems are not adequate especially for large families that have lots of freezing needs.

If you visit supermarkets and malls, you will find very large compartments that are used to store ice creams and other products that are required frozen. These compartments are known as Walk-In Freezers and have very heavy insulation to ensure that whatever is stored remains frozen for a long time. They are also very common in restaurants and fast foods. The other type, which is almost similar in terms of freezing capability, is the Portable Freezers, which are very easy to move around. They can keep food cold for a long time even in the absence of power.
